With many of the Disney resorts spanning four countries and three continents, guests often require transportation not just to get to the parks, but also to move around within them to reach all the rides.

Both Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California feature a now-iconic Monorail that takes guests in a loop between different parks and doubles as a leisure ride offering views of the resort from above.

Opening to guests in 1959, four years after the park opened, the first Disney Monorail in Anaheim was created by famous ride designer and Imagineer Bob Gurr to expand upon the futuristic theme of Tomorrowland.

A similar and much longer 14-mile Monorail loop was built on the opposite coast in Disney World by 1971 to connect Magic Kingdom with the Transportation and Ticket Center and two resorts. When Epcot and new resorts were built over the coming decades, the Monorail was expanded to additional stops and two separate loops.

Disneyland Monorail and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin closing down by April 2026

Over in Disneyland, the resort is set to temporarily shut down the Monorail for what is likely to be the renovation of a ride that is now almost 70 years old.

Although Disney has confirmed only that the Monorail will be unavailable beginning March 30, the theme park previously filed for a construction permit requesting authorization to replace entry and exit signs with digital ones and make small upgrades to the network’s electrical system, Inside the Magic reported.

Disneyland has not officially announced a reopening date. The last published estimates show that more than 340,000 guests use the transportation system per year.

Given that it is used by those coming into the park from parking lots, in addition to those within the resort, the Disney World Monorail transports an average of more than 150,000 people just on a single day.

Along with the Monorail, Disneyland is also shutting down the “Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin” for renovations on March 30.

The ride, located within Mickey’s Toontown in the main Disneyland Park, was built in 1994 and takes guests through a dark set with scenes from “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.”

Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin opened in Disneyland in 1994.

What else to know about the scheduled 2026 ride closures in Disneyland

“Steer a runaway taxicab through the wacky streets of Toontown as you follow the adventures of Roger Rabbit,” Disneyland writes in its description of the ride.

As first reported by watchdog blog Inside The Magic, the planned shutdown first appeared on Disneyland’s scheduled refurbishment calendar this week.

The theme park is not releasing details on whether Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin will undergo routine maintenance work or a larger overhaul; it has also not shared a reopening date.

Refurbishments and maintenance upgrades are a routine part of all theme park operations, and barring any immediate needs, shutdowns are usually scheduled to be spread out across different parts of the park and ride types to be less noticeable to visitors.

Throughout January and February, Disneyland rides such as “Haunted Mansion,” “Galaxy’s Edge,” and “Mark Twain Riverboat” were all shut down for periods ranging from a few days to several weeks for both routine maintenance and a change of decorations for Lunar New Year.
